Wow, this brings up an interesting point.

Remember when the Gameboy Classic was just about the height of slinky electronics.

In fairness, it probably could have been thinner, but Nintendo wanted to make a handheld that would survive the rigours that a portable piece of hardware might be subjected too.

I think you may of missed the point here. I'm pretty sure that the majority here are shocked that this kid didn't think there would be an devices using 'electricity' 20 years ago.

The Sun® should stick to the essential stuff that is usually included on Page 3. Still 20 years ago was not that different when you wrap your mind around it. If you get a Gameboy, cut it in half and ta-dah, you basically have a Nintendo DS. Of course, there is a few technical differences but we do not need to discuss the small tidbits.

Not as good as spellingwalkie-talkies.

In all seriousness I have a record turntable on my hi-fi and it's great thanks.

Gramophones rock, clubbing would suck without gramophones.

TBH we're just showing our Age. Yeah these kids arent impressed by the original Gameboy, but then if the first console you had (remembering these kids are ~11) was a PS2 or a PS1 you're going to think anything running in Black and white (or green) in 2D with no backlight is just crap compared to a DS or PSP.

Show any 11 year old an old Black and White film and they will tell you the same thing.

Show me a black and white film and you'll get that same responce.

I have a sneaky suspicion that most people here don't even care. They're just saying that to fit in, and be part of the group.

I've never read anything so utterly wrong in my entire life. Wario Land II on the Gameboy was and will ever remain platforming perfection, i've not played a platformer since then that can live up to it's glory. Graphics is improving with the DS/PSP, but it doesn't nessecerily mean that the vital part of it the gameplay is improving at all.

Tetris on the Gameboy will forever remain the best in the series in my opinion, it was no holds barred and extremely difficult, all the newer spin-offs are just using the same formula but using different visuals, no doubt Tetris DS is good, but it's ruined by the sheer idiocy of constant rotating to stop the block fitting, if you made a mistake on the Gameboy version, it was almost certainly a game over on the higher difficultys/speeds.

I think its to be expected that a kid of 11 is not going to be very impressed by an arcade machine that came out 17 years before he was born! I doubt I would be very impressed by much of the technology from 1963 either (the start of the space age would have been cool though).

When I was 11, I still had a Commodore 64. I loved the Space Invader games you got sometimes while waiting for a game to load but my expectations were not based on PS2 quality graphics. Actually they should give kids of today Speccys and Commodores just to see the look of horror on their faces when they realise that they have to wait 10 minutes or more for the bloody cassette to load! :D

I think DML needs a slap for the grammar failure in the thread title.

If you actually bothered reading what I said you will have noticed I was referring to 11 year olds who have only known 3D worlds, Playstations and Xboxes. To suddenly be thrust into a Green 2D world where everything is monochrome and flat and has tinny MIDI music playing in a never ending loop must seem like hell.

You and me know different. We grew up with the GB, the Game Gear and everything since so we can appreciate the games for what they are, but to the newer generation its like being forced to listen to old 78RPM LP after having your ipod taken from you.

I don't believe that the original Gameboy had Midi synthesis. Indeed, if I recall correctly, the overall sound quality of the original Gameboy was actually quite startlingly good for the time, especially if you wore the headphones.

I believe it actually used a similar method of sound replication to the Amiga, wherein digital samples could be played back, but space and processor limitations were obviously much more of a bottleneck on an 8-bit machine with a single CPU.

Dot Matrix With Stereo Sound, indeed.
