I'll give him the benefit of the doubt this time.

But next time, I won't be so lenient.

Genuine

I remember playing my PSP mostly at home back in 2005. Handhelds, particularly when you are on your own, can be much more immersive than a home console. Try Lumines with a decent set of headphones and it becomes almost hypnotic.

I still play my GBA at home mostly as well, and I don't think my wife's DS has ever left the house.

Way to openly beg for this thing to be hacked to smithereens :fp: Especially bittering to hear as I'm about to start 999, an excellent game I'd not be able to play were the system region locked...

The only hope one can have is that they start having some 3DS games up for download, and we could see some Atlus esque games over here in that form exclusively.

Either way though, blagh. This now has me hoping the 3DS won't have the next Ouendan :| I don't want to have to import a unit, I want to be able to easily buy games from where I live.

I'm kind of hoping it's an indicator that Nintendo want to push away from physical media based games.

The only thing it is really an indicator of is that with all the new "outside the game cart" features, like Street Pass, Online, the Store etc..., it's much easier to just region lock the games, than try to make sure all the 3DSs are compatible. A Japanese game in a Euro 3DS StreetPassing a US 3DS with a US game = *Boom* or a lot of extra testing that Nintendo have just decided to eliminate by creating obvious regional barriers. A Euro game rarely communicates multiplayer with a US or Japanese game, but Street Pass, Online and DLC will just be that on a much larger scale. Nintendo's official PR, if they even issue one, will certainly "blame" this, or they'll do the Wii way and go "Parental Controls won't work. LOL".

Rage! I often import games for DS from America to get them earlier and sometimes a bit cheaper, plus I would never have gotten Ouendan without region free.

It does not really bother me that much but it is definitely annoying.

Surely the rational thing to do is just to try and make all versions of the game as similar as possible, with as few differences from region to region?

Hardwarewise, there was no difference between a japan ds and a euro ds, though the games weren't always compatible with other region versions for things like multiplayer. That was purely software, though.

With the 3DS though, it may actually just be possible to push full, new titles via download through wifi as well as retail.

At the very least, I'd like to be able to duplicate the ability of my DS&Flashcard to keep the games I want to play on the 3DS instead of relying on carts, and there must surely be large appeal for Nintendo in cutting retail out of picture.

Well, yeah, but as you said yourself most multiplayer games aren't compatible because the code has changed when being localised. When you've got games saving to, sharing and reading from a shared pool of memory on the 3DS, suddenly it takes a lot more work to make sure that every version of every game can work with that, so it would be a lot easier to just region lock it and prevent any possible problems. This is like the multiplayer incompatibility, but taken to the extreme, and it's a purely software problem too.

How can you know that a Japanese game is going to be compatible with a EU/US game, if the EU/US game has yet to be made? Then what if during localisation, something comes up? Saying they should keep it the same is one thing, but actually making sure that happens would be a lot harder to predict.

EDIT - I should point out it's just one possible reason for it, and it really isn't a very good one (is there such a thing as a good reason for region locking?). I imagine that in a well programmed OS, the system would be easily able to handle such things without any trouble anyway.

I used to get almost all of my games from North America and Asia, but then I had an OCD phase where I had to go replace them all with PAL versions of the same to keep everything uniform.

I had to do the opposite and replace my PAL DS games with the US versions for the superior spines. :shifty:

I hope the European 3DS game boxes aren't as bad as the DS ones. That would ease the pain of the region locking.
