I liked the first game a lot. I’m glad that I did my first run at the hard difficulty though. Playing on normal makes the game less fun.

Alan Wake was a rarity for me so I'm really glad to hear there's more on the way.

But it seems to me that creating another new IP using the same engine might be a good idea - just need to stick a "from the creators of Alan Wake" on the box.

Couldn't the same be said of a lot of games? We wouldn't have Resident Evil 4, which still stands as one of the greatest games to be ever be released, if developers followed this train of thought.

Is there any particular reason you failed to reach the end? The game, along with the DLC, do resolve some of the major story themes, with the second downloadable content sets up a cliffhanger, which I assume this will resolve.

If the sequel is going to be as dull as the first game, then they can keep it. Then again, the 360 has no games coming out so it could do with it, I guess.

Honestly, I don't recall. It was probably a combination of flagging interest and shiny new titles.

The thing about RE4 is that is practically IS a different game. I don't think it would hurt the game at all if it was shorn of all connections to previous RE canon. It might even improve it.

You can have a gameplay sequel without necessarily having to continue the story.

It almost did, really.

If there is a new game coming, I'd buy it just for the soundtrack

Exactly. So near, and yet so far.

But at least it managed to tell a complete story from beginning to end.

Enjoyed Alan Wake but didn't find it to be good value for money in terms of gameplay hours which is why I will rent Alan Wake 2 and that is probably one of the reasons sales weren't fantastic.

What? The game was about 12 hours long.

It had some really great touches and some superb spooky moments but I just couldn't be arsed with it from a certain point onwards. Shame, as the story was really interesting. If they can do what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed 2 and remedy the repetitive gameplay then they can win me over.

I found the first three episodes to incredibly tedious, but there's a marked improvement after that and the environments and situations become a bit more varied. There's still a lot of padding though and it's hard to stop that inward groan when you realise you'll have to traipse through the woods yet again. I reached Episode 6 last night - I'll take whatever ending they give me. I don't need a sequel.

My god, I don't think I ever want to walk through a mountain pass or wooded area in a video game, ever again.

Alan Wake was seriously repetitive. Interesting story, but towards the end I just could not be arsed anymore.

If I'm spending £35-£40 on a game, I want more than 10-15 hrs gameplay. That's why Alan Wake is a rent not a buy, however I did thoroughly enjoy the game.

Once I had played it once, I didn't feel the need to replay it on a higher difficulty/get collectibles etc.

I doubt a tacked on multiplayer would've really added any more hours, though.

Some kind of alternative endings scenario like they always do in the Silent Hill games would've been good, and offered some replay value, but it probably wouldn't sit well with their heavy narrative focus.

They'd best bring back the free-roaming sections this time around, being able to explore an entire town would add lots of wasted hours. Especially if they made it seem like an actual town, Shenmue stylee.

Basically, it needs some kind of cat-stroking QTE, then I'm happy with it.

Frequently when playing the first game I wanted to run off and explore the world. I would welcome some sandbox gameplay.

I think they need more daylight time where players can explore the world and discover the story, enjoyed the combat and it was snappy enough to never get old for me.

How long are we talking though, aren't they doing Max Payne 3?

Yeah

Remedy sold the rights to the Max Payne franchise a little after Max Payne 1. Max Payne 3 won't be developed at all by Remedy and is owned by Take 2.

I suppsoe it could be quick then since they have the engine work done, hopefully get a PC version this time.

Well, Alan Wake was one of the worst high-profile games last year. Repetitive, terrible animation, a hugely unlikeable antagonist, boring combat, sub par voice acting... but it had potential. It was a pretty game and the engine is there so as long as it doesn't take 5 years to make, be released and shows up it's age and mechanics with much better titles released at the same time then it could be a great game

Massive hyperbole there, but it was a disappointment and didn't live up to the hype. There's potential there for teh sequel to be a great game.
