I'm worried about the RTD of it all as well.

In my estimation he has probably done equal amount of good and bad in his time with the franchise so whilst I'm hopeful we will get "good RTD" out of the new series I remain ever wary that "bad RTD" is just as likely an outcome

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this

You're certainly not alone feeling like this Shy Guy. I've got a lot of time for RTD for his work on Who and much of his other work. But many of his Who stories ultimately often flattered to deceive and yet it undeniably resonated with the audience and that generation of kids who got into the show because of his time are understandably excited. I wonder if the shift towards fantasy will help or not.

I plan on rewatching the specials again this week even though overall it was a mixed bag for me. They were at the very least fun something that for the last few years certainly wasn't a guarantee.

Looking forward to finding out how many Shakespeare heads everyone thinks the new eps are worth. 8-)

I'm holding off on the new ones till I've finished rewatching/catching up with the 2005+ shows.

Just wrapped up Amy and Rory, but now we're spending time with Clara who has never been my favourite. Looking forward to the specials and then Capaldi, even though I think he never really got particularly great material to work with. Looking forward to revisiting those episodes.

I watched it last night, well this morning I suppose... It's not gone exactly how I'd like.

I thought the first episode was alright. The title of it didn't exactly fill me with confidence in the first place. Enjoying the new lead actors though. Second episode was a lot of fun, felt refreshing as a 'historical' episode that doesn't really focus on the historical characters, which is fine by me because I tend to prefer the futuristic stuff with the sci-fi concepts. This one of course had more of a fantasy focus thanks to the Toymaker's lingering influence. Loved the music and the setting.

Not got round to the new eps yet but I did manage to finish rewatching the specials last night. In preference I think I'd order them-

Wild Blue Yonder 4/5 (just)
The Church on Ruby Road 3/5
The Star Beast / The Giggle 2/5

Beyond NPH as the Toymaker I really struggled to enjoy The Giggle and as a conclusion for the trilogy I thought it was pretty poor. A lot of the big beats just dont work for me at all. Spoiled incase Devlin reads this The idea that the Doctor never stops feels like RTD just ignored the actual events that took place. When Amy and Rory left the Doctor goes and lives in some clouds in a kind of exile. He spends 24 years with River and then spends decades teaching at the university. This is ignoring the 1000 years at Trenzalore as well (might have been a bit traumatic). I thought it was very clear that Moffat was having the Doctor grieve at points so it just feels like RTD was forcing an idea into a place it doesnt fit. The second TARDIS really bugs me to. The Doctor is going to stop travelling but I'm going to keep my TARDIS so I can still pop out. Are we genuinely meant to think the Doctor is just gonna not do anything when aliens attack next time? Then you get this idea that 15 is healed after 14 takes his time out. But 15 is created before this happens!? Anyway. It was bollocks really and a very underwhelming reason for 14 to have 10s face.

Revisiting the Capaldi run recently was really interesting for me. He has a few duds for sure (they all do tbh) but I think most of those are not as bad as some would make out and I got an extra appreciation for some of the stories I was a little less keen on first time round. I also think some of the character work is absolutely brilliant and handled far subtler then earlier series which rewards revisiting.

I think Capaldi is just so very good an actor he can at times spin gold out of trash.

On my rewatch I had a greater appreciation for the 12th doctor era after how unserious the 11th doctor's era felt a lot of the time. Capaldi brought real gravitas to the role.

right then here's some thoughts on the latest episodes

episode 1 - bit of a mixed bag
i think it actually a pretty good idea for a story. but it could have been better. also could have been a lot worse i suppose. there was something about the babies that didn't look right. i just didn't believe that the voices were coming from them. so that cgi couldn't achieve the muppets have been doing for years. it was nice to have an elaborate explanation for the monster, it just i've always been very squeamish when it come to that so i wont be watching it again. there was a lot of familiar ground with the doc and ruby so the start made me feel like we were right back at series one with 9 and rose. sigh so much for the start of a new era

episode 2 - wow! and actual good one
jynx was on fire! what a villain. disney hire her to play and big bad in an animated feature. a music version of the toymaker is a solid idea and i feel it was well executed here. glad we avoided to much of them saying the historical figures were so great as they've have done in the past. didn't like when they said that music was the only way someone could express themselves. music is just one form of art. and ending with that "musical" number was painful to watch

still feels like we're waiting on 15 and ruby to come into their own but it is still early days

I think after the specials and this it’s looking like this is no longer a science fiction show. It’s much more magic/fantasy were stuff can just ‘happen’

I really enjoyed Capaldi's run and 'Heaven Sent' is possibly my favourite Who episode. I can't believe that was 9 years ago!

I wasn't a big fan of 'Space Babies', I hope it's not indicative of the rest of the season.

RTD did say that he was gonna do that. of course DW has always had some fantasy leanings but there were usually better explained

Second episode was a slight step up from "Space Babies" but wasn't great. That ending was pretty cringe.
