If popularity = quality then Britain's got Talent would be a better television programme than The Wire

I've already covered this by saying it received widespread critical acclaim as well as tens of millions of sales, which the example you gave doesn't.

As for the retards comment I admit that wasn't the best choice of word, ignorant would have been better.

Th whole issue of 'widespread critical acclaim' is debatable. Primarily, how many outlets are there now that come under popular criticism? Granted, the Halo series has gotten the backing from the more established of these outlets but, as has been pointed out on these forums many times over, even those most respected are prone to mistakes, oversights or pretention.

I mean, Britain's Got Talent has won loads of television awards (admittedly in the specific Talent Show categories), does that not count as widespread critical acclaim on top of being hugely successful?

When Edge review Britains Got Talent I'll let you know.

Positive: 68 out of 68 Mixed: 0 out of 68 Negative: 0

I'd say that covers all publications.

68 out of 68 positive reviews, from all sorts of publications, I'd call that widespread.

Are they all well-respected? Known for being scrutinous?

If you want to use that consensus argument, then The Hurt Locker is objectively better than Back To The Future. No point arguing it, it's an objective truth.

Some are, some probably aren't, that's what I'd call widespread. You can't really argue with 68 out of 68 positive reviews though can you.

It was, but I think BS and Rik took offence to some people mentioning that they don't like the Halo franchise.

I agree. I think sometimes people get a bit wrapped up in the idea of certain games being art and seem to forget there should be some sort of fun gameplay there.

I am also in agreement. It's very rare when a game can be truly considered to be artistic, so people get kind of carried away with those that are. See also: Braid.

Gears of War is the one that immediately springs to mind. COD as well when I think of over rated multiplayer but I generally have enjoyed all the campaigns in the COD gmes I have played.

I'd agree with Halo here. I didn't rate it, but that's mainly because i prefer shooting guns rather than alien weapons. I also really disliked the vehicles in it, particularly those banshees.

Braid - i've had more fun with kidney stones.

Grand Theft Auto games - i just can't enjoy the unwieldy controls.

FIFA - as per GTA games.

Fight Night games (since the first) - the 1st was great, you could win a fight by outboxing your superior opponent. THey've gradually eroded this tactical element in favour of other fads.

Castlevania SOTN - clocked it a few years ago, but thought it was much much worse than the Metroid games. This kinda ruined my enjoyment of the game.
