Is the PS3 Obsolete?

Does anyone still have their PS3 still setup for gaming?

Mine is basically a blu-ray player, having moved onto PS4/switch for gaming.

My cousin has yet to upgrade to PS4/5, and has asked my if PS Plus is still a 'thing' on the PS3. I can see there are no new free titles each month, but does PS Plus still unlock titles that have been previously downloaded on the service?

Does anyone know, or can test it?

I did fire my PS3 up the other day to watch something and it did force a system update, so it can't be totally forgotten about by Sony!

Many thanks in advance!

You can definitely still download old plus titles on it, as I have mine set up. I don't bother to check for new plus stuff on it but I think it's been nothing on there for a long time.

Woah that was speedy, thanks Victor!

Yeah, Sony announced that it was to to close down the PS3 store a few months back but, after uproar from gamers, kept it open... for now.

I have recently setup my PS3 again after having it lurk in a cupboard for a while. I even bought a game, Sega's Alpha Protocol, earlier this year after seeing Orange Rakoon chatting about it here in GR.

Additionally, last month the news broke that fans are working to enable online play for some PS3 titles, too.

So... PS3 lives!

Mine is predominantly used for movies and music. It's very rare I'll actually play a game on it. I was under the impression that the online buying and PSN side of PS3 was now defunct.

The Store is still available but it is never updated and - rather unbelievably - last time I looked the "buy" button for each game was invisible... it is there, and works, but just doesn't show :fp:  .

So pretty much abandoned if not completely obsolete then. How does the Xbox 360 store compare?

Last time I checked - maybe a year ago? - it was up and running, Gem - albeit, as with the PS3, there are no (or very few) updates or additions.

I have a ps1 and ps2 hardware backwards compatible og PS3 set up. I need to mod it to sort out how loud it is, but I have no plans to get rid of it.

It's also the only blu Ray player. I have a grand total of about 3 blu rays, but at some point in the future it's going to be the cheapest way to purchase 1080p HD films etc for permanent playback, although arguably a digital download would do the same thing.

I've got two PS3s. OG 60GB Phat model with all the Backwards Compatibility and USB sockets still intact, and a Super Slim. Both still work, though the Phat has the common Jet Engine fan issue. I check into that every so often to see if there's a reasonable fix yet but so far nothing viable.

I use the Super Slim as my go-to for playing PS3 games. It's also the one I use if I'm streaming something. The lack of PS3 compatibility on PS4 and PS5 means that there are a load of great games trapped on the system. Most of them are reasonably cheap to pick up on disc as well. So yeah I tend to use mine as often as I use any of my older systems.

Kept mine, sold my PS4 a month before the PS5 launch for £130. So between those two machines I can play all five generations (I have a launch PS3 which plays most PS2 games). Plus it's still good as a BluRay/media centre device. And still having my old 3D TV and a good few 3D BluRay discs, I can't watch them in 3D on the PS5. Combine all this with the low resale price, and there's zero reason to get rid of it.

I'm struggling to think of any worth playing that haven't been re-released on PS4.

The Killzone franchise, Spec Ops the Line, older CoD games, MGS4, MGR, Tokyo Jungle, RDR, Asura's Wrath, PS2 era collections, any other multiplats that haven't seen re-release

You have to use a specific tool to remove the heatsink (the actual cover for the Cell cpu) and replace the terrible thermal compound under that as well as on top with a silver compound like Arctic silver 5. Then mod the fans with a pot to deliberately run them just a tad over medium speed to consistently cool the whole thing instead of it revving up to full speed after 5 minutes of doing... anything on the console. The risk of cutting up the cpu is pretty high.

+ Deadly Premonition, Noby Noby Boy, Fallout* New Vegas, Anarchy Reigns, Dead Space 1/2/3, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ico, Midnight Club Los Angeles, MotorStorm, Alpha Protocol, Split/Second, NBA Jam, Dirt 3, Portal 1/2, Shatter, Ratchet & Clank, House of the Dead: Overkill, Resistance 3 and Transformers War/Rise**.

PS3 still rocks pretty hard :toot: .

* Not 3 as that runs legendarily bad on PS3!
** Did those two Transformers games get digital-only ports that were available for, like, a month or something?

Yeah I've seen that. Not sure I'd call it a "reasonable" fix though. Certainly miles beyond my capabilities and I'm not afraid to get in about a console with a soldering iron.

Yeah I'm tempted but the tool is more than a tenner and sharp, so there's a risk of just slicing though the hundreds of traces to the cpu which means a pretty strawberry floated console. Working ones are already rare. I probably don't play it enough to kill it off anytime soon so there's not much point.

I played Fallout 3 GOTY edition on PS3, it was fine. New Vegas was certainly worse when I played it on launch. I've no doubt Fallout 3 was very bad at launch on PS3, but presumably it got patched - as did New Vegas.
