I think spending £5 on 2001:A Space Odyssey is the best ever bargain in my life.

It's bloody magical. I try to make an effort to watch it once a year!

Haven't seen any Renoir films, should make a point of catching some, if only to catch up on cinematic heritage.

There are very few films I can watch repeatedly. Although I went through a whole phase once where I'd watch The Big Sleep pretty much every week. Despite having loads of unseen films. I've seen Dune loads of times too, it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

I haven't seen 2001 :fp:

It is on my list and I almost bought the DVD the other day but I thought I'd get the blu-ray one day instead.

My love for that film knows no bounds. Sergio Leone is quite frankly the best filmmaker ever as far as I'm concerned, he got progressively and significantly better with each film of his. I've just got a soft spot for Once Upon A Time In The West.

Though I'm certain the film I've watched the most is a tie between Robocop and Nowhere To Hide. Paul Verhoeven and Lee Myung-Se, two other favourite directors of mine. Verhoeven has made some crakers if you look past the Showgirls-style output. His earlier films before Robocop were terrific. Plus he also made Total Recall and Starship Troopers, cementing him as a director of cool.

I'm in the same boat, but I've never watched the same film in the same year. Keep it fresh and I don't want to get bored of it!

The Terminator, 2001 and both Godfather films get this treatment. The original SW trilogy used to be on that but since the presequels it ain't the same...

I'd dispute that. As far as I'm concerned his opus was The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Seen A Fistful Of Dynamite? Blows The Dollars Trilogy out of the water altogether. He definitely had a taste for the grandiose, even what could be the simplest, most small scenes are done in mammoth style. This one shot in A Fistful Of Dynamite where it's pretty much just a train pulling into a station with some guards around is turned into a sweeping shot with hundreds of people, refugees being mowed down, so much cramnemd in. Breathtaking stuff.

Yes, when I say he got progressively and significantly better I am largely talking in the sense of his direction and shot structure, man certainly had a lot of flair.

Yes.

Isn't overblowing a minor scene a tad self indulgent?

Oh yes, very indulgent. When Leone does it, he doesn't hold back, it's as gloriously decadent as it could possibly be. And when the whole film is like that, it reeks of class for me (albeit, possibly more of a guilty pleasure klind of class). Same reason why I adore Amadeus, it's such a vivid film in its use of costume, music and settings.

You'd probably like alot of Federico Fellini's films then.

I do enjoy Fellini.

He has more humour than the rest of the gloomy neorealists, so he's a winner in my book.

Gran Torino

Brilliant. If this really is Clint's last film in front of the camera then it's truly one of his best and behind his output continues to make me think the title of 'Best Living American Director' may well be his and his place in the all time list just keeps rising.

Moon
I love these types of film and with no showings available at any of my local cinemas I've been patiently waiting for the legit BluRay release for my first viewing. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

The expected twist from the the trailer turns out to be a plot device which underpins the rest of the movie, but what really made it for me was the incredible sense of isolation invoked not only through a stellar performance(s) from Sam Rockwell, but also from a style and tone which is handled through incredible set design, modest camera work and a haunting soundtrack.

A great first outing from Duncan Jones and quite possibly my film of the year.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - 6/10

Was ok but nothing amazing. Did what I expected it to and would have gotten another point or two if they had left the bloody ending the same as the book!

Now that I'm finished with my last lot of films, I have a whole bunch of 'em lined up for the next 3 weeks or so. All 80's, all never seen before.

Raging Bull
The Sure Thing
Stand By Me
Field of Dreams
Wargames
Scanners
Brazil
Sex, Lies & Videotape
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Dead Poets Society
Rain Man

Anything I should be watching first? Anything I should be avoiding?

Raging Bull first, I think.
