Well, the thread title is spot-on. Apparently Nintendo's profit during the years from 2017 to date is greater than their total profit between 1981 and 2016... even when taking account of inflation. Quite astounding!

It also demonstrates just how the gaming market has grown since those NES and SNES days... and even the Wii and DS ones, too.

I think it also validates Nintendo’s decision to get out of the tech arms race in 2006. A law of diminishing returns that’s killing the software industry and the developers that make them.

What does it tell you that machines that have been technically inferior to the competition (PS2, DS, Wii, Switch) have run away with it. It tells you now blowing £300million on a game just to turn a 6% profit is stupid because you can make an equally excellent product (many would argue better) on hardware that is about a decade out of date.

I’m not surprised. Look how much they’re still charging for seven-year-old hardware, which is still selling in mad numbers.

Hmm, but what about pre 1981? Maybe they were making a killing on playing cards in the 19th century?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

They still do, 99% of the profit on those graphs comes from Pokémon cards.

Switch emulation is really hitting them hard, I see.

The graph only applies if you include Gary Bowser's payments.

I wonder if Microsoft might ever take this approach? They could re-release the Xbox One as a new console...

I don't want Nintendo to make record profits, I want them to sell the Switch OLED at a reasonable price...

With them making record profits, I'd like to think we'd not see the culling of internal studios like we've been seeing from all over the gaming world in recent months.

I think you were looking for a price under £300, Curls? The console is currently £274.95 at Amazon, if that helps.

Thanks Jawa - However, I have decided to hold fire with the imminent release of Switch 2. Spending £275 to play Hades and Hades 2 when a new console (which will hopefully be B.C) is due seems a bit silly. Also, a friend of mine has said I can borrow his when he finishes a game he's currently getting through!

I feel like under another publisher Retro would be long gone by now...

Nintendo are actually meant to be expanding their development teams at the moment rather than culling

I'd say they need to do that. Nintendo's flow of new games on Switch still felt way behind their previous eras. I know that's because there's no longer a dedicated SD handheld to develop for, but that combined with the profits feels like a great reason to keep growing - sustainably, natch.

Hardware sluts and port beggars should be forcibly gifted Nintendo shares.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
