Doki Doki Literature Club

One of those games that goes in a cool direction but you can't really say anything because it would spoil things for anyone who hasn't played it yet. Well worth spending 4 hours to play this free visual novel on Steam.

Great game - I actually set up a steam account some years ago just to play it. Now I have a Steam Deck it is nice to see it there in my library.

Anyway, last night I finished Yakuza 6. An excellent "ending" to Kiryu's story. Those last 15 minutes of cut scenes were excellently done and genuinely brought a tear to my eye.

Gameplay wise it was more of the same, but I think the story it tells puts it well in to the top half of the franchise. I also liked the way focus returned to just one character. It was a breath of fresh air after 5.

8 (it would score higher, but I have basically played this game 7 times already when you include Judgment).

Death's Door (Switch) - 8/10
Could have done with a few quality of life features, such as a map(!), but overall this was a great, little, straightforward adventure; with superb art direction, music, story and humour. While it was more tricky than hard, a couple of the later bosses took a while to get through (that bloody yeti!). Still a bit left to explore (on 78%) and the true ending, but don't think I could be bothered to find all the seeds (ergo, a map would have come in handy!).

I absolutely adored this. Totally agree with your point on QOL features but everything else comes together so well to create a great little game

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest - 9/10
+ Still a brilliant game
+ Looks, sounds, and plays just as well as ever
+ The changes for Master Quest make things feel a bit different/fresher

- I was expecting/hoping for more change and challenge

I'd been chipping away at this for a while and finally went back and finished it. Still as good as ever, but having completed the original game quite a few times, I was hoping for more challenge here, or it mixing things up more than it did. The Spirit Temple gave me a bit of trouble, but otherwise didn't seem much different. I think I died twice overall (not counting fairy revivals) which feels pretty standard. Still, it was a good excuse to play it again.

Null Drifter - 7/10

Short, arcade shooter with progression unlocks. Very good. Can be bought for less than a quid.

Tangle Tower - 8/10

I rinsed this in one day. Abrupt ending but it was a good ride overall. Really enjoyed how snappy the UI was. The graphics, the writing and the voice acting were all top notch.

Steamworld Dig 2 - 8/10

Too short! An improvement on the first one. Holds up on a second playthrough.

Control - PS5 - finished the main story but have a few side things left to do. Excellent game with a lot of freedom to do things in any order and go at your own pace. Combat and movement feel great, loads of secrets and some great music.

Wish my image sig would work

Mario Kart Double Dash - 6/10

+ Looks nice enough
+ Karts handle quite well, although takes some getting used to
+ Reasonable amount of stuff to work your way through and to unlock

- Tracks aren't that great
- The cheating by AI opponents is off the scale
- Two characters per kart adds nothing
- Very annoying characters who won't shut up

This kept me entertained enough to get gold on all cups and unlock everything, but it's such a frustrating game, and easily the worst Mario Kart I've played.
I'm used to the AI cheating in Mario Kart games, but it's so blatant in this, and the mechanic of two characters per kart, and the selectable karts, don't add anything meaningful to the game. Your success in the game largely comes down to luck and how much the AI cheats, which doesn't make for an enjoyable game.

Smashed a few games over the past couple of weeks:

High On Life - 5/10 - Really rather dull and lacklustre. It wasn't even very funny after the first five minutes.
The Talos Principle - 9/10 - Loved it and can't believe I hadn't played it before. Like The Witness but arguably much better, it wasn't completely pretentious for a start. I might play the DLC.
Ghostrunner - 7/10 - This was pretty cool. Was like a mix of Neon White and Doom, very stylish. Wouldn't mind playing again to go for high scores, etc but probably don't have the time.
Moons of Madness - 5/10 - An okay walking sim with a Lovecraft meets Mars horror vibe. Nice environments and some simple puzzles but absolutely nothing special.
Superliminal - 7/10 - Thought this was a fantastic little puzzle game. Really mind bending and a great idea. Some puzzles worked better than others but using perspective to manipulate objects felt really unique.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - 9/10 - Great game that I haven't played since the original DS release. Lovely little story and mystery and just great puzzles with great music.
RE4: Separate Ways - 10/10 - Just more Resident Evil 4 really but that's clearly not a bad thing at all! Was more difficult than the base game and it was really nice to see a lot of set pieces from the original that didn't appear in Leon's story.

Spoilt for choice on what to play next but I've narrowed down my list to; Mafia, Tormented Souls, Observer, Ghostwire: Tokyo, or VTM: Swansong. But also tempted by Robocop and also need to start Act III in Baldur's Gate 3.

See how I feel tomorrow but I sense Robocop on the horizon :dread:

Cocoon 8/10 - great puzzle game, nothing overly taxing but a nice idea and relaxing to play

Inside 8/10 - bizarre game but worth playing

Jusant 8/10 - gorgeous game and climbing in a game is finally done properly

Brok the investigator 7/10 - point and click meets streets of rage, with nice character art and great voice acting

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom [9]

Just finished this a few moments ago and thought I'd give my immediate thought after having completed it:
+ What a joyously imaginative game this is! There were so many moments in this where half my mind was thinking, "Nah, they're not going to do that, are they?" and then they did! It was almost as if they had a design brief that was unfathomably elaborate and they managed to implement all of it.
+ the systems, particularly your ultra hand / Rauru powers, should be game-breaking. They allow you to do so much, let you imagination run free, and yet they don't give up or buckle under the weight of my clumsy inventions. It felt like being a kid, knocking around in a Lego set again; trying things, seeing them fail, and wondering..."what if I tried it this way?"
+the verticallity (and the sense of vertigo it induced in me) was quite something. It's just baffling that you can sky dive from the sky islands, and land on a Hyrule as big as the one in BotW, or even into the lands below without any break in the action. That this is all running on the Switch that was released six-and-a-half years ago. Beggar's belief.
+ The quality of the vast majority of the game is quite profound, too, with side quests and locations providing distracting interest almost all the way through.

- the game, like so many others over recent years, was just too big (I'm not going to even think about buying Baulder's Gate). I would have enjoyed it far more had they trimmed some of this down. The Fifth Sage quest line, although it had some decent moments, felt very superfluous and I was more than happy to see credits roll on this at the end, which soured the ending somewhat. Would have been a dead-cert [10] for me had there been the option to wrap-up the main quest line 30 or so hours earlier.
- in fact, I thought aspects of the Fifth Sage quest were a bit egregious, especially knowing where to go to trigger the quest properly, which felt a bit unfair (was I the only one who looked-up how to get this quest started?). Same could also be said for the Yiga Clan boss quest line where the final location would have been very difficult to spot had I not caved and looked this one up. Both could have been signposted to avoid a bit of frustration.
- the final battle was not as climatic and epic as I felt others had led me to believe it would be. I also thought it was odd that, none of the other sages really had much of an impact on proceedings, and neither were you asked to use your ultrahand abilities. In a game so teeming with imagination elsewhere, this felt a little flet.

After a break, I know I'm going to go back to this. I've got the guide book on my shelf so I plan on sweeping through the remaining shrines and side quests, getting armour sets, and maybe actually defeating a lynel at some point! Looking forward to it, but for now, after 100 hours, time for something else...

[BTW, this now joins a very select group of game that I have played for around 100+ hours - I think BotW is another one, Bloodbourne, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and 4, and Oblivion).

It's been a long time since I posted on the forum, but I am still lurking and in that WhatsApp groups.

Just came on to rate a few games I've beaten recently.

Spider-Man 2 - 8/10

Solid game with run set pieces and an awful story where no one behaved logically. I could have screamed at Norman at the end.

Mario Bros Wonder - 7.5/10

Pretty fun game. All reasonably pedestrian in pace. The wonder effects put a smile on my face around a quarter of the time. Perhaps I'm dead inside. No real challenge to speak of.

The Last Guardian - 6/10

Consistently annoying, with inconsistent execution. Some really cool ideas. Seemed designed to frustrate and pad a six hour game out to an eleven hour game.

Good to hear that you're still gaming and have popped back here, Clarkman!

WhatsApp groups? I hadn't known about these... then again, I don't have a smartphone. I'll stick to the forum  .

Scooby Doo Night of 100 Frights on GameCube. This was surprisingly solid for a licensed kids game. It controlled well and the voice acting throughout was great although the laugh track was a little grating. I’ll give it 6/10 it would have been a 7 save for some really fiddly platforming near the end.

Shenmue 2

I only ever played the first game back when the first two games were actually "new", so playing these remasters seemed like the best way to get myself up to speed before dipping in to the highly acclaimed part 3.

I think Shenmue 2 was very weak compared to the first one. The map is far far bigger, but it lacks much of the charm of that found in the first game. The game had some of the most bizarre pacing I have ever experienced, with entire sections dedicated to combat (which is not great), QTEs (which are awful here) and then a large chunk of walking simulator (no problems with this).

The dialogue remains top tier and there absolutely is a charm to the game (plus not having to wait around for things to happen in real time makes things far more manageable), but it certainly felt like a log when climbing up and down about 30 flights of stairs in one section.

6 (because I love Shenmue 1)

Carrion 9/10

A fairly short but very satisfying Metroidvania in which you essentially play as a brute force version of John Carpenter's Thing, looking for a way to become human enough to escape a research facility.

It loses a point for not having a map but it's short enough that it doesn't become a major problem.

Would be very interested in a sequel.

Mafia

Always loved the original and this is my second time playing the remake. If there was one game I'd love to see adapted into a TV show, it'd be this. 7/10 game but an 8/10 story with a slick presentation.
