Pressing up and down to control it. What were they thinking?

Yeah the big hands boss fight music is amazing :toot:

The games may have varied wildly in quality since the classic era, but the soundtracks in Sonic games almost always deliver :datass:

Some of my favourites from the classics:

And some "modern" highlights:

I know, but at the time, there was no indication that this was how you do it, and i certainly wasn't the only one who got stuck at that point.

In fact, it was pretty notorious.

If memory serves Sonic Boom didn't have good music.

Tell you what had far better music than it had any right to - the Master System/Game Gear versions of Sonic 1.

Bridge Zone is an absolute all timer, so simple and yet so good!

And Jungle Zone is just one hell of a Jam :toot:

Yuzo Koshiro is a strawberry floating wizard. :datass:

Sonic 3 Credits is nice, but it lacks the "medley of zones" approach of the other classic games which is a mark against it for me.

The Sonic and Knuckles ending medley is great, really crescendos well from the epic Sky Sanctuary track into the theme at the end

You bet your ass it is! :datass:

The remixes of classic tunes are great, but the new tracks have got some amazing grooves as well

I never had a problem with this back in the day as I'd time the jumps just right to get through. However what I suspect I was really doing was pressing down while in the air at the top of the jump and holding it until the barrel went to the bottom, so unwittingly using it as intended but thinking the jumping was doing the work.

Can confirm after months of experiments, the jumping alone did NOT work.

My own research yielded the same disappointing results.

Edit: Just watched a vid on the barrel and recalled trying to jump with Tails following and messing up the momentum. You had no chance at all!

That barrel was a goddamn menace. I got stuck there for strawberry floating ever.

The 2D Sonic soundtracks were always fantastic, and among the first things I got into looking up and downloading when I first on online, back in '01-'02.

 The transition from Lava Reef to the level boss remains one of, if not the best moments in 2D Sonic history.

Ruined my childhood. I'd spend hours jumping on that thing trying to get past it. I only beat Sonic 3 by doing it as S3&K and playing Knuckles who doesn't have that bit in his level.

Now I’m in my 40’s a good test of my dropped reaction time in gaming is that I can no longer complete any of the special stages on Sonic 3. Zero. Back in the day I finished S3&K with full Hyper Sonic on Doomsday Zone multiple times. Surely the crowning 16bit platformer?

Same here. Used to be so good at the hyper special stages I'd be doing tricks like bouncing off the bumpers and running backwards through parts just to style it up. Last time I replayed I was failing all the time :fp:
