Is it balls. First mass-market 3D device with the same level of power as its home console equivalent and you're expecting it to come in at £100? Mental.

Nah. Regardless of power I think portables need to be around the £100 mark. £130 max. Do you think the average person cares that it is nearly as powerful as a Wii or does 3D?

If this is coming from management from a video game shop, they know fuck all, trust me. I was telling them stuff before news even reached them

Why. Not everyone is a geek.

I honestly think Nintendo are making the same mistakes with this as Sony made with the PS3.

Rubbish. The idea that you can "buy a 'proper' console for £200" means nothing to a consumer who doesn't want one. The DSi, DSi XL and PSP already shows that £100 - £130 max doesn't apply, and restricting handhelds to that price simply holds them back.

It has nothing to do with the power of the thing, if Nintendo can make it compelling then people will buy it. They won't go "Oh, I can buy a Wii for that price, a handheld shouldn't be the same!" They'll just see the games and stuff it offers and decide based on that if they want one.

Dude, this is probably the first time people are bringing 3D into their homes and it's everybody's first opportunity to see 3D without glasses. It's a big deal

I agree no portable hand held multimedia device should be more than £200 (including iphone, though it should be) but £100? You're having a giraffe

We shall see. I'm not expecting DSesque sales though, especially with the advent of smartphones.

I'm hoping that it will be under £200.

Hoping!

An 8gb iPod Touch can be picked up for around £180 (I know, it doesn't do 3D) which is really the 3DS' biggest rival at this point, so I think pricing it below that is a must for Nintendo.

If the 3DS manages to command even half as much of my attention as the DS has, even some of the most high end estimates are bargain basement. One week and we'll all know! Can't wait.

You think it needs to be priced below a music player that is half as impressive technically (no 3D, no 3D camera, augmented reality or full scale games)?

The 3DSs biggest rival will be the Nintendo DS. As for non-Nintendo hardware, iPod and iPhone are simply not in the same league as gaming devices and PSP has essentially tanked in its current generation.

As usual there is basically no competition in the handheld market at the moment, so there is no pressure for Nintendo to undercut anyone. The only thing they have to worry about is people deciding to spend the money on a home console instead. 360 and PS3 are probably more of a threat to the 3DS than any portable device.

Does the 8GB iPod have a camera?

I'm going for an EU prices of €250 with a UK price of £220.

My point isn't that the technology is not impressive. It's that I just don't think the average person really cares when they can play Angry Birds on their smartphone.

Somebody doesn't have a clue about the iPod's power or popularity.

Oh dear god, I'm not getting into that arguement. :fp: If people want to delude themselves into thinking that a device without analgue/d-pad or buttons can compete against pure bred handhelds in their own market then they are welcome. Arguing against such willful ignorance is pointless.
