Right, had along hard think about this last night and have come around to the idea of building a PC. WHile I haven't got a bottomless pot of dosh, I'm not going to be upgrading again (hopefully) for another 3 years or so.

Anyway, is this all hunky dory? I'll use my existing HD4670 for the time being and crossfire it if necessary.

Unless you're doing something ultra-specialised, you don't need 16gb of RAM, and I doubt you'd get the full value from a 6 core CPU either. If I had 700 quid to spunk on a new PC, it would look something like this

With the extra 200, you could either push up the CPU to a 2600, or get a desperately needed graphics upgrade. Or, a bit of both.

I see what you're saying but surely it's better to go a little over the top with a view to it lasting longer?

As for specialist stuff, I do a fair amount of CAD which is pretty moderate but I have about 20 or so tabs open in explorer all the time. And video editing.

I might even play some gaems too.

That's not a "little" over the top.

The problem is, going over the top doesnt really work like that. It tends to be more specialised, so if you go with a hexacore cpu now for specific tasks, it wont last you any longer than a top end quad that will do anything well would.

Tineash seems to be spot on with his build, Id say.

Tineash is right, as usual.

Back to the drawing board. I'll keep the mobo, drop to a quad core phenom and halve the memory. Also change the case & psu to Tineash's spec.

Also, what's the issue with the Sandybridge processors? Or is it the Mobos?

I think I might end up buying this

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/weekly_sales_III/

Not with that case though (I'm leaning towards the 2nd midi tower on the list) and a bit more RAM.

I might go with a silent cpu fan rather than liquid cooling though.

People buying pre-builds

Mommy, the issue was with the motherboard chipsets. And Id always recommend an aftermarket cooler, theres no reason not to have one.

Pre-builds arent all that bad. It's reassurance versus price.

Cool about the er, cooler. So has that chipset thing been fixed. That asus mobo write up says the SATA ports 2-5 are likely to shorten the life of the gear.

Don't sound right.

Thats the fault.

If you want a trouble free one then wait a few months, they've just done a massive recall.

I'd be quite happy to self build if I was physically able to, unfortunately that isn't the case.

You can order all the bits and get someone else to build it, it'd still cost less.

Theres always a bunch of people in the paper offering exactly that service. I do it myself.

Is there much advantage to having liquid cooling over fan cooling as I can't help but feel a little uneasy about having water 'inside' a PC (I know it doesn't actually touch any electrical parts but still...)

also, is it worth the extra £30 for the 'gaming' RAM?

These are all questions that whizz through my head. I really haven't got a clue.
