I don't tend to read the manual for most games but for some games (Civ IV, Oblivion) the manual adds to the overall experience.

another reason why I dislike downloading games from Steam.

I must admit that I don't enjoy trying to read PDF's formatted for print on my monitor.

Just noticed Ubisoft said they stopped the paper manuals due to "environmental" concerns :|

FIFA maker EA Sports has ditched physical game manuals.

Instead, EA Sports will include instructions accessed from within the game, Kotaku reports.

EA Sports aims to support more environmentally friendly game production, the company said.

French company Ubisoft was the first to abolish game manuals. Ubisoft worked out that one ton of game-manual paper costs the planet roughly 13 trees, and making that amount of paper pumps out 6000lbs of CO2 gas and 15000 gallons of waste water.

It begins 8-)

Largely a waste of time in the modern age. They should all adopt the 'home guide' Wii Virtual Console games all come with so its only ever a button press away. PS1 downloads have such a thing too.

I imagine some adventurous publisher will be offering them as a pre-order bonus soon.

We don't need them, as such. It's not really the manual I miss.
